Mulching Felt
Terralan

Mulching can often be the key to a successful vegetable garden. The benefits for crops are numerous. Overall, it protects the soil and its microorganisms, prevents the growth of weeds, maintains consistent moisture levels, and significantly reduces the need for watering. Mulching will help increase your yields and allow you to enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables in greater quantity.

Let’s take a simple example: forests. There is no soil more fertile than that of a forest floor — yet no one adds fertiliser or tills the ground. So how does nature do it? The answer is that the soil is never bare. It is constantly covered by a layer of leaves and wood: a natural mulch. These organic materials feed a whole network of animals, insects, bacteria, and fungi which, in turn, enrich the soil with their waste.

Sheep wool mulching felt is therefore an excellent alternative — an ecological, natural, and local solution for mulching your vegetable garden, orchard, flower beds, or hedges.

The Terralan pure wool mulching felt:

Slows evaporation, captures ambient moisture, and helps the soil retain its freshness. Thanks to its structure, wool can retain 30% of its weight in water via its hollow fibres, allowing it to absorb morning dew by capillarity and release it slowly throughout the day — reducing the need for watering.

Protects the soil from wind and temperature variations. It acts as an effective barrier for cold-sensitive plants, as wool is naturally insulating. Even when wet, its insulating properties remain, due to the air pockets between fibres that prevent plants from freezing.

Biodegradable: TERRALAN contains no harmful substances, as our wool is untreated. It integrates well into the soil after degradation and enriches it with nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Greatly reduces or even eliminates weeding, while boosting biological soil activity. In addition, its fibrous texture makes Terralan a natural repellent against slugs and snails.

Reduces erosion depending on the terrain profile, helping to stabilise the soil.

Easy to install: lightweight, easy to cut, and with its neutral colour (which may vary slightly depending on the wool batch), it blends beautifully into the landscape. Rolls are sold individually and offered in four different densities.

Terralan’s Powerful Yet
Understated Benefits

Terralan Advantages:

  • Moisture retention: Can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water, releasing it gradually to the soil, significantly reducing the need for irrigation.

  • Thermal protection: Wool felt moderates soil temperature fluctuations, protecting roots from extremes.

  • Weed control: Studies show that well-structured wool felt can be as effective as synthetic geotextiles in suppressing weeds.

  • Nutrient release: As it decomposes, wool naturally releases nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium into the soil.

  • Biodegradability: Made from untreated wool, Terralan breaks down without leaving harmful residues and contributes to healthy soil.

  • Natural pest repellent: The fibrous texture deters slugs and snails.

Available Grades

  • Erosion control: Helps stabilise the soil and prevent runoff.
  • Simple installation: Lightweight, easy to cut, and aesthetically discreet in any landscape.

    Composition
  • 100% Belgian sheep wool
    Needle-punched (no binder)
  • Aiguilleté

Application

  1. Lay directly on bare soil, free of grass, old crops, or debris.
  2. Do not cover with additional materials to allow the wool to breathe and avoid premature degradation.
  3. Easy to cut with scissors.
  4. Staple down edges (2 staples/m²).
300 g/m² – Direct seeding / Winter cover
Ideal for direct seeding of root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, salsify, and scorzonera. This weight significantly reduces weeding (20 minutes per bed vs. 4 hours without felt) and limits watering by reducing soil evaporation. It also enriches the soil with nitrogen (15%), 70% of which becomes available to plants within 50 days.
Dimensions: 30 m x 1 m
400 g/m² – Suitable for annual crops
Designed for long-cycle annual crops. Provides lasting protection and maintains constant moisture for optimal growth.
Dimensions: 40 m x 1 m or 0.5 m. Recommended for tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants.
600 g/m² – For biennial crops
Suitable for crops such as chard, celeriac, cabbage, and certain flowers. Offers stronger weed protection and moderates climate variations while improving soil structure.
Dimensions: 20 m x 1 m or 0.5 m
900 g/m² – For perennials and climbing plants
Perfect for perennial plants, hedges, vines, raspberries, strawberries, currants, and other shrubs. Offers long-term protection and promotes biodiversity.
Dimensions: 20 m x 1 m or 0.5 m

Terralan’s lifespan is up to approximately 48 months, depending on installation conditions, soil type, and climate. Other weights and widths available upon request, depending on order volume.
